Frequently Asked Questions

Students who are unsure of their course choice should make an appointment to see the Educational Counsellor to discuss this.  Before visiting the Counsellor, it is a good idea to visit Cascaid.    Passwords are available from the school and students can do a range of questionaires and activities to explore their career options.

Do a Course Search.  Pay careful attention to the Entry Profiles and the details given under Entry Requirements.  Click on ‘English, Welsh and Northern Irish Qualifications’ to find a list of required grades and subjects.  For all courses you need to check both International GCSE, AS and GCE A Level requirements.

It is advisable to email the Admissions Office of the relevant university if you are unsure whether you meet the Entry Requirements. This should be done before you enter the course on the UCAS form.  It is a good idea to file the replies you receive in case you need to refer to them at a later date.

Universities have different policies regarding native language A Levels.  Therefore you should contact each Admissions Office and ask what their policy is.  Please note that even within the same university, this may vary from course to course.  If you receive a positive reply, it is important to file the email in case you need to refer to it at a later stage in the application process.

A buzzword is a word or phrase that is chosen by your school. The Grammar School buzzword can be viewed here.  You will need to use the school buzzword when you register in UCAS Apply. It links your UCAS application to the school so that the Deputy Headmistress can check your application and prepare your reference. No, the five choices are entered alphabetically.

Providing you have entered the School’s buzzword, your completed UCAS form will be sent to the school. Your application will be checked and the reference will be added on.  If there are any errors, the form will be returned to you by the referee for you to correct.  When everything is complete, it will be sent to UCAS by the School.

Many universities acknowledge your application by email or by letter after they have received it.

University departments have different policies on when they make offers. Some wait until after the 15th January when all the applications have been received to answer applicants.  Others will make offers at any point after receiving the application.

Applicants are usually required to make their final decisions in early May.  Students who have received Conditional Offers will choose a ‘Firm’ and an ‘Insurance’ choice.  The Firm choice is the university that the student will definitely attend if they meet the offer.  The Insurance choice should have a lower requirement and will accept the student if their Firm Choice is not confirmed when they receive their results in August.  If a student receives Unconditional Offers, they are required to accept only one offer.

The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Vet Science and Dentistry is 15th October.  For other courses it is the 15th January.  The Grammar School has earlier deadlines to facilitate the preparation of references.

Some courses and some universities require Additional Admissions Tests which need to be taken by students in the year they apply through UCAS.  For more information, click here.

The Personal Statement is an extremely important part of a UCAS application.  It needs careful planning, drafting and re-drafting.  It is a good idea to begin your draft in Class 6 when you have researched the course you wish to apply for.  Use the Guide to Personal Statement Writing that you receive from the school. 

For certain courses such as Teaching (Primary and Secondary), Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science, work experience is compulsory.  Students must research the requirements of individual courses very carefully to establish if work experience is required or preferred.

For ALL other courses, work experience of any kind is always an advantage as it illustrates that a student is self-motivated and can manage their time efficiently.  If it is possible to obtain work experience closely related to the course you wish to follow, it is advised that you arrange this ahead of time.  This may then be referred to in the Personal Statement. 

Graduates completing their obligatory military service should refer to their rank in the army in their statements in terms of the skills they gain.

The Higher Education Advisory Team guides and assists students and graduates throughout the entire application process.  Teachers also give advice on Personal Statements in their subject area.

The Team are at the school on results day in August to assist students should the need arise. 

Students in the EU may apply for a loan to cover their tuition fees.  Due to the increase in fees in 2012, we anticipate that many students will opt to apply for this loan.  To obtain the loan, students need to complete an application form for the appropriate year of study.  This usually becomes available in March of the year of entry. We advise students to conduct their own research into the details of the loan regularly, as changes and updates may occur. More information may be found here.

Graduates who are serving in the army are advised to send their applications in their first year of military service.  They are therefore encouraged to prepare their Personal Statements in Class 7, prior to graduating.

The key to making a competitive application is building up an excellent academic profile and range of extra curricular activities which enhance additional relevant skills.  Students should research well ahead of time so that they know what is required by each university for the course they wish to apply for.  They should read widely around their chosen subject area so that they can refer to this in their statements.
