Reference Policy

References for University applications are prepared by the School after consultation with the appropriate teachers.

In order to ensure accuracy and fairness, the points below must be adhered to:

  • Students are required to use The Grammar School buzzword for UCAS applications in order to obtain a reference.  The buzzword is updated annually and is available from the school

  • The buzzword ensures that the student’s application is connected to their school.  This is standard procedure in the UK and if a student does not apply through their school then it may lead the universities to question why. The buzzword enables students to be connected positively with other Grammar School students currently studying at any institution

  • The buzzword allows the School referee access to the UCAS form so that it is checked for errors and returned to the student if mistakes are found.  This reduces the chance of a university place being cancelled due to the wrong information being included on the UCAS form.  If this occurs a student may be disqualified from making an application through UCAS for the whole academic year

  • The School referee is aware of the subjects and levels studied at The Grammar School should any questions be raised. For example the type of English Language qualifications etc.  This varies from school to school so it is essential for the referee to be aware of these

  • It is of paramount importance that the universities receive a consistent and fair record of students.  If different referees are used, this may jeopardise students’ applications

  • The predicted grades are collected by the referee from the relevant teachers.  Again, consistency and fairness is crucial

  • References are prepared appropriately, according to the prescribed regulations by UCAS

  • Universities in the UK are familiar with The Grammar School and a relationship of trust has been built up with the school due to the number of years we have been sending applicants
